What is a Gestational Surrogate?
In many cases couples who cannot have children decide to use a gestational carrier. This is often a preferred option because a gestational surrogate contributes no genetic material to the baby. This means the birth mother does not have the right to change her mind and keep the baby, in addition she is less likely to form an attachment to a child to which she has contributed no genetic material. Many women who become surrogates already have children of their own and do not want to have any more.
If you are an individual or a couple who wants to use this method of surrogacy, the first step is to choose a mother to carry your child. This can be done by using an agency who matches surrogates with parents. Once you have chosen a surrogate from the database, the procedure of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) can begin. This is a medical procedure where eggs and sperm are taken from the parents and fertilized in a Petri dish, then transferred to the surrogate. After the transfer, the surrogate rests for a day or two and monitoring for pregnancy is done. The procedure is repeated at a specific time if pregnancy does not occur, until it does.
Surrogates often receive substantial compensation for their services. And, their medical care is also fully paid for. This includes care received before and during the pregnancy, and during the postpartum period. If you are considering hiring a surrogate through the agency it is important to understand all the costs you are responsible for. It can be an expensive process but for many childless couples money is no object. In some cases a close friend or family member may serve as the surrogate and charge very little if anything to the parents.
Whether you want children of your own or want to help childless couples achieve their baby dream, consider going the route of the gestational surrogate. This is an ideal option for couples who want a baby that shares their genetic material. It is an alternative to adoption that many people consider. There have even been recent celebrity couples, like Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, who have used a surrogate to bear their children. Doing your own research on the subject is advised because surrogate parenting is not something to enter into lightly, on either side.
